There are a vast number of “Christians” with a vast number of differing beliefs regarding the road to salvation, but does it really matter? It does matter, according to some sobering scriptures that many may not know of, or have forgotten about.
Scriptures that warns about those who believe they are righteous but are not, and others who will preach another gospel other than that which was given to us by the apostles, deceiving many.
The Holy Bible tells us that in the last days, many will turn away from the truth and go their own way. This is not just a warning about those who reject the faith entirely, but also some within the church itself. We are told to be on guard, that subtle error that may question the deity of Jesus, his bodily resurrection or that Jesus is the only door to eternal life will lead some astray. Also to be vigilant about not so subtle error that claims the bible is corrupt or incomplete, and those who will twist and distort what the apostles said.
Galatians 1:8-9; But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!
2 Peter 3:15-16; This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him… and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.
There are many sobering scriptures in the bible that we should take very seriously. Sin not only leads to complications in our lives, but also a second death. Consider that God himself came to earth as a human (Jesus), and suffered indignities, brutalities, torture and death so we could live. Sin is serious to God and we often minimize its consequences.
1 Peter 4:17-18; For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
I suspect there are many who call themselves believers who rarely if ever, pick up the word of God. The bible is how God speaks to us. If you don’t read it, you are not hearing from God.
Hebrews 4:12-13; For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
2 Timothy 3:16-17; All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Don’t think that because I am only using one scripture for each point that there are not many, many more. It is for the sake of brevity I have kept the examples to one.
Relatively Few Make it to Heaven
Few are willing to accept that Jesus is the only way to eternal life.
Matthew 7:13-14; “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Even fewer are willing to submit to him completely, because of the earthly wants and desires that we put before God. How do I know? I am guilty too.
Mark 10:25; In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”– Jesus
Many Who Believe They are Righteous Are Not
Matthew 7:21-23; “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’
Some Will Desert Truth For Something More Appealing To Them
1 Timothy 4:1-2; Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings, influenced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.
Others Seek Teachers Who Agree With Their Wisdom
These are people who will pick and choose the parts of the bible that they agree with. They choose comfort over conviction so find churches with preachers who won’t offend them with the truth. They judge God’s word instead of letting it judge them.
2 Timothy 4:3-4; For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things. And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths.
So Called Believers Will Oppose the Truth
Acts 20:27:32; For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! …Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
Guard Yourself, Lest You Fall Too
2 Peter 3:17; Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.
False Prophets Will Lead Many Away
False prophets will always attack the deity of Jesus Christ and the established core message of salvation.
2 Peter 2:1-3; But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
People Will Trust In Their Own Wisdom
Proverbs 14:12; There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.
James 5:19-20; My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
1 John 5:16-17; If you see a Christian brother or sister sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death.
Galatians 5:19-21; When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
Sin Equals Eternal Separation / Hell
Anyone who chooses to continue in sin, is in grave danger of eternal separation from God, and suffering the second death which is Hell.
Romans 8:12-14;Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
Revelation 2:11; “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death.
No One Can Be Perfect
God does not expect us to be perfect, because no one is, nor can they be. That is why we all need Jesus Christ.
Psalm 103:14-18;For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust. Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone—as though we had never been here. But the love of the LORD remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children’s children of those who are faithful to his covenant, of those who obey his commandments!
There is a difference between those who are struggling and battling with their sin, and those who are complacent and accepting of it. Remember, God looks at each heart.
I am ashamed of many things I have done in my life, things I have done in ignorance and out of rebellion. I am suffering the consequences of those actions in my soul and in my relationships, but God still loves me, and forgives me. He exposes the sin in my life and I have a choice to repent and change my attitude towards it, or ignore him and continue in it.
1 John 1:8-10; If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
The apostle Paul puts it this way in the book of Romans chapter 7;
Romans 7:14-15, 18-19; The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.
And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.
What then is the answer? Paul explains in Chapter 8. Trying to be good in our own strength does not work because the sin in us is more powerful than our will. Only through Jesus Christ by his Holy Spirit can we overcome the sin in our thoughts and actions. It is through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit that we are free to choose God’s way or our way.
Romans 8:1-2; So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
Romans 6:16-18; Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. Thank God! … Now you are free from your slavery to sin,…
God Wants Every One To Be Saved
The only thing standing in the way of us and salvation, is us.
1 Timothy 2:3-6;This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.
God’s Love For Us
Romans 8:31-39;What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Seek God With All Your Heart
Matthew 22:36-40; Teacher, which is the most important commandment…”
Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
150 thousand souls leave this earth each day. None of us are guaranteed another day, but those who have given their lives to Christ can be confident the he will bring them safely into his kingdom on the last day.
1 John 5:13-14; I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him.
