This post is important for young and old believers alike. The video below is precisely why this blog came into being. I could no longer standby while people misrepresent, and malign the Christian faith with misinformation fueled by an ignorance of history, literature and science. This post is lengthy, but if you are at all interested in refuting anti-Christian rhetoric, you will find this post helpful.
Atheist apologists like Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss are on a crusade for converts. These popular “New” atheist PhDs travel the globe shaming anyone who may subscribe to the theory that the universe has purpose and design. The ridicule is baseless and refutable. This video is a textbook case of how atheists attack the Christian faith, as Dr. Sam Harris makes specific claims castigating the morality of the “Christian God”, and therefor, Christianity faith itself.
The original video was rife with disturbing images for what I can only guess was to invoke extreme emotion. Since emotion disrupts reason, one might miss the poor arguments being stated as one is flooded with horrific images. I have removed the imagery so I could present his arguments on merits alone.
Evil and Suffering
There is no denying that the argument from evil and suffering is not an easy one to answer. So why listen to anything I may have to say? I have had to watch two of my children die, one my daughter Sara, quickly in my arms and the other, Josh my first born, slowly in my wife’s arms. I experienced my preteen nephew die from a reaction to an aspirin [acetylsalicylic acid] pill. I also had a friend killed when he was hit by a random flying projectile, and my brother died just out of his twenties, a week after an emergency room doctor misdiagnosed him.
I say this so you know I am acquainted with events that may call to account fairness and justice in the world. I became a Christian as an adult, well after my nephew and brother died, so this post is written from the perspective of someone who knows tragedy, suffering and pain.
Suffering and Evil in the world is very tough to square with God’s love and justice. The Christian believes that in the end, Justice will prevail. There is coming a day when God will make all things right after all, the hundred or so years we live here is nothing to the eternity he has waiting for those who chose not to reject him.
Romans 8:10-11; But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies
Revelation 21:3-5; “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!
You can watch some in depth videos that discuss the God, suffering and evil subject on my youtube channel.
9 Million Children Die Every Year
Any god who would allow children in the millions to die in this way… either can do nothing to help them, or doesn’t care to. He is therefor either impotent, or evil [Harris Video]
I can’t answer why children die of disease or tragedy. I do know that God has a different view of death. We are spirit beings and death is not the end of us. 150,000 people die every day around the world. God knows every one and looks at death from an eternal perspective. Yes, my children have passed on and I experienced anger, loss and sadness. But I know that my children are conscious at this minute and their spirits are alive. They are safe and they are with their heavenly father, who loves them more than I could have ever done.
We miss them terribly, but we have hope for the future. We don’t know why they had to go, but we understand that sin and decay has brought about suffering to everyone, believer and unbeliever. He never promised we would escape suffering, the bible tells us we will experience it, but not alone. If not for our faith, our marriage would have been destroyed, if not after Josh, certainly after Sara’s death.
Did I ask God why? You bet I did. It took my wife almost six years to get pregnant the first time, she was forty years old and he died 19 days after he was born. All nineteen days were spent in the ICU, while various Christian friends told us God was telling them Josh would be OK. Well, he died, but I don’t hold God responsible for what other people were telling us. They were only trying to help us deal with fears and doubt. We stayed in the word of God and in prayer for our strength. On the morning Josh died, my wife was reading her bible, and she told me that she knew God was preparing her heart for that day.
The video calls God evil or impotent, and I can say from experience that God is neither impotent, or evil. He is loving, just and omniscient. Our children are just as much his, they were a gift and a joy to have had for even that short time. We are expectant and joyful to know that we will see them again and forever know them.
Harris Cites what I believe to be a reference from a 2015 UNICEF report that refers to the nine million children under five who die each year. Lets look at the statistics. [note, none of the claims in the video have citations]
24 Thousand/day Die Because God is Immoral
According to UNICEF, Out of the 24,000 a day that die, almost half [45%] of them [10,800] are infants under 28 days old. The vast majority of all deaths are due to malnutrition. In the video, images of natural disasters where playing out during this the narrative leading the viewer to relate the deaths to a morally bankrupt god. The reality is, the deaths are a result of war, greed and human indifference, a preventable tragedy and cannot be blamed on the Christian God.
Some may blame God because of drought and food shortage. According to an expert panel of the UN Committee on World Food Security report, in 2014
- The United States wastes 40% of its food production
- Europe throws away 100 tons of food annually
- The United States produced 87.1 million pounds of hops in 2016. What America drinks in beer alone could end child hunger.
The Christian God does supplies enough food. Those millions of dying children Harris describes are on each of us, not God.
56 Million Die Each Year by Abortion
153 Thousand/day Die
Harris blames God for the deaths of 24,000 children a day, 1,000/hr, 16/min, because we won’t feed them. Lets look at another preventable even greater tragety, abortion. According to the Guttmacher Institute, an organization which is connected to Planned Parenthood, 56 million children lose their lives each year, 153,000/day, 6,400/hr, 106/min, almost 2/second. The vast majority [86% to 92% in the United States] of these children are easily preventable. Harris leaves this atheistic morality statistic out of his video
During 2010–2014, an estimated 56 million induced abortions occurred each year worldwide.¹
Although the abortion argument does not refute Harris’s arguments against the morality of God, it does speak to the morality of societies who disregard God.
God Sends Good People To Hell
No matter how good these people are, they are doomed [Harris Video]
The next argument in the video is that this loving God sends good people to hell and that isn’t moral or fair. What standard of fairness and morality is Harris using? His own? It is by subjective morality that Harris is judging God, which means it changes with time, culture and societal opinion. World War II Germany felt it was moral to declare Jews sub-human. If the whole world was convinced of this, subjective morality would agree, but it would still be wrong.
Objective morality does not change. Harris states that God is not bound by morality. It is God’s nature that morality stems from. He is good, loving, generous, kind, faithful and just. That is why he says what was sin yesterday is still sin today, because he has not changed his nature. Adultery is normal today, but God’s nature, and objective morality has not changed.
People think that today society is becoming more open and accepting compared to the dark past of religious oppression. When in reality, society is reverting back to Roman and ancient Greek morality where anything with anyone goes. Don’t be fooled, we are not progressive, we are regressive.
God set the standard for good, and he says no one is good enough. We have fallen, we need a savior, and God has provided our remedy.
Ephesians 2:8-9; For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Harris is unhappy that the price of eternal life is faith in Jesus Christ. In his mind that is immoral somehow. In the video he accuses God of purposely engineering peoples death and failure.
God created the cultural isolation of the Hindus. He engineered the circumstance of their death in ignorance of revelation. And then he created the penalty for this ignorance. [Harris Video]
This is absurd. Hindu, Muslim, or atheist, they were all born out of a rejection of the Judeo/Christian God. This was man’s choice, not God’s providence. If Harris wants to lay blame for isolation from God somewhere, he need not look any further than himself.
Even though man has separated himself from God by rejecting him, this loving Christian God asks his people to go out, often at the cost of their own lives to reach them. Quite a contrast to the God Harris talks about.
Mark 16:15-16; He [Jesus] said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Does God Condemn?
John 12:47-48; “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. [Jesus]
Matthew 12:36-37; But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” [Jesus]
Eternal life is available to everyone through Jesus Christ. If anyone rejects him, they condemn themselves. God has no favorites and does not discriminate. We are all made in his image.
2 Peter 3:9; The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
1 Timothy 2:3-4; This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Ezekiel 18:30-32; Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, … For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!
Galatians 2:6 God does not show favoritism
Acts 10:34-35; Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.
Serial Killer Goes to Heaven
This objection I will agree, cuts to the core of a persons sense of justice. I am not going to determine the limits of the grace of God. But there are principles in scripture that tell us that no one will be able to put anything over on God. He knows every persons motive and intention, and if a person thinks he/she can mock God their whole lives committing all kinds of evil acts, then repent at the last moment, they play a dangerous game.
Galatians 6:7-8; Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
Jeremiah 17:10; I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind
Matthew 9:4; Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts?
God draws people to himself through out their lives, but a lifetime of rejecting him may in the end cost them as scripture talks about giving men over to their sins. There could be a time when God lets you have what you want.
John 6:44; No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,
Psalm 81:11-12; But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.
Romans 1:26-31; Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. … and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
In these and other scriptures, it seems that continual rejection of God and his goodness can lead to an increasing state of debauchery and sinfulness. Could a person in that state even know or want to reach out to God at the last moment to be saved as Harris suggests? I don’t know, and neither does he.
Caring For the Suffering of Other Human Beings
This kind of faith is obscene. To think in this way is to fail to… care sufficiently about the suffering of other human beings [Harris Video]
Really? It is Christians who began building hospitals on a large scale. After the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, hospitals were built in every town with a major church. [Catholic Encyclopedia (2009)]
“During these centuries the Christian faith . . . permeated all aspects of life in the West. The very conception of medicine, as well as its practice, was deeply touched by the doctrine and discipline of the Church. This theological and ecclesiastical influence manifestly shaped the ethics of medicine, but it even indirectly affected its science since, as its missionaries evangelized the peoples of Western and Northern Europe, the Church found itself in a constant battle against the use of magic and superstition in the work of healing. It championed rational medicine, along with prayer, to counter superstition.” [A Short History of Medical Ethics, by Albert R Jonsen]
By the mid-1500s there were 37,000 Benedictine monasteries alone that cared for the sick. It was not until four centuries after St. Basil’s hospital that Arab Muslims began to build hospitals.
Over two millennia, Christian doctors and nurses, inspired by the example and teaching of Jesus of Nazareth, have been at the forefront of efforts to alleviate human suffering, cure disease, and advance knowledge and understanding. Rosie Beal-Preston examines how the Christian Church has played a major role in developing and shaping the practice of Medicine.
Jesus of Nazareth taught: ‘Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40) [Triple Helix 2000comes, the British Medical Association’s Millennium Festival of Medicine; pp9-14]
From Mother Teressa to the millions of missionaries who spent their lives caring for and educating the poorest of the poor. Even the threat of death didn’t keep them away. For their trouble, atheists and secularists find fault while doing little or nothing themselves.
I’ve spent a number of years in India and Africa where I found much righteous endeavour undertaken by Christians of all denominations; but I never, as it happens, came across a hospital or orphanage run by the Fabian Society [a British socialist organization], or a humanist leper colony.” [Pathos]
Harris made a comment about religious ignorance as well. Consider this, universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Oxford were all Christian built schools.
106 of the first 108 colleges were started on the Christian faith. By the close of 1860 there were 246 colleges in America. Seventeen of these were state institutions; almost every other one was founded by Christian denominations or by individuals who avowed a religious purpose. [Pathos]
An honest study of the history of care for the poor and sick will divulge the true contribution of Christian care for society.
Harris’s argument is shown to be utterly without substance.
Slavery today carries a very negative connotation very different to ancient culture. There were no welfare states back then, so when people got into trouble they would sell themselves into slavery rather than die of starvation, or to pay a debt that they could not settle with assets.
The bible clearly teaches that slave, free, man or woman, all are equal under God. It also states that if you have a slave, he/she must be released after seven years whether they have paid the debt back or not.
1 Samuel 15:2-3; This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt.
Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.
This scripture is tough to read today for sure. In verse two God is punishing them for what they first did to Israel and as we read on, it is certain that the Amalekites are receiving what they had been doing to Israel for two hundred years.
The genocide argument from ignorance and out of context applying today’s thinking. Opponents of God, like Harris, will impose 21st century cultural views on the biblical ancient culture while leaving out important historical facts.
The facts are that ancient societies were cultures of war and conquest. Harris makes the Israelites seem to be the neighborhood bullies, when in actuality, war was common.
2 Samuel 11:1; In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war,…
The Amalekites were descendants of Esau and long time enemies of Israel. It was Esau who sold his first born birthrights to his brother Jacob [Later named Israel by God] for a meal. Then when Jacob tricked his father into giving him the first born’s blessing, Esau became Jacob’s sworn enemy and swore to kill him.
Genesis 27:41; Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
As time passed the Amalekites, Israels sworn enemy, wanted to wipe Israel off the map. [This is still going on today with the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham’s first born son. God promised he would give him a son and make a covenant with him [Isaac]. But Abraham and his wife Sarah got tired of waiting so Sara gave Abraham her maid servant as a wife and she became pregnant giving birth to Ishmael. Then God’s promise came when Sarah gave birth to Isaac who received the covenant blessing angering Ishmael. Sounds very similar]
Genesis 17:19-21; Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. But my covenant I will establish with Isaac,
The Israelites suffered attack after attack from the Amalekites. What was the King of Israel supposed to do when other Kings continued to attack them? They did what they had to, to destroy their enemy and accomplish peace for their people.
- Exodus 17:8 Before Israel was even a nation, still in the desert, the Amalekites attacked them and tried to wipe them out
- Numbers 14:45 Amalekites attack Israel
- Judges 3:13 Amalekites attack Israel along with the Moabites
- Judges 6 The Amalekites joined others and continued to raid the Israelites year after year, devouring and destroying crops killing live stock leaving the Israelites without the ability to feed themselves
Judges 6:4; They [Amalekites and others] camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count them or their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it.
- 1 Samuel 30:1– The Amalekites raid David’s town burning it to the ground kidnapping all the woman and children.
- The Amalekites tried for hundreds of years to wipe out the Israelites before God’s command to destroy them finally came.
- 1 Samuel 15:4 Another people were among the Amalekites called the Kenites. The king of Israel warned them to leave the Amalekites or they would be in harms way, which they did and were not harmed.
- Even then, God told the Israelites to try and make peace, sparing their lives if they would submit to subjugation.
Atheists also like to cite the poor Canaanite victims who suffered destruction by the Israelites. Were the Canaanites innocent or victims? As discussed above, they too were apart of the culture of war, constantly attacking and Waring with Israel. The Canaanites worshiped gods like Baal and Asherah, by practicing ritual sexual acts that included incest [child and adult], and bestiality².
Among their deepest depravities was their sacrificing of infants and young children by burning them to death on an alter to another god named Molech³.
Leviticus 18:21; Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.
The “Valley of Ben Hinnom” was where the sacrificed children were cast. God is clear that he will not put up with depravity forever from anyone, including his own people. Justice and judgment will come.
The Israelites later rejected God’s morality and took on the practices of the Canaanites risking God’s judgment on themselves.
Jeremiah 7:30-34; The people of Judah have done evil in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols in the house that bears my Name and have defiled it. They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind. So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. Then the carcasses of this people will become food for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away. I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, for the land will become desolate.
None of this information is ever mentioned when people bring condemnation of God’s morality. They always pick and choose scripture and events without disclosing complete context.
Strange Loving God Supplying Bad Evidence
If you lived two thousand years ago there was evidence galore, I mean he was just performing miracles. But apparently he got tired of being so helpful. [Harris Video]
He got tired of being so helpful? A rather pejorative statement and not additive to his argument. Jesus was put to death despite the evidence. And, he was put to death by church leaders who saw him as a threat to their position and power.
There are those who just refuse to believe and refuse to accept God’s message of salvation and I don’t think any amount of evidence will change that. What more could be done than what Jesus has already done to convince anyone.
Luke 16:31; He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. [Jesus]
There are thousands of years of testimonies from what God has done in peoples lives. There is the testimony of Jesus and his disciples and the testimony of the Holy Spirit in human hearts. If that is not enough, then nothing will be enough.
Harris is leaving out the metaphysical which he has no belief in either. There is an enemy of the human soul who corrupts our thoughts and entices our selfishness and desires.
Can Dr. Harris, or any atheist site any evidence at all that life ends when the brain and heart cease to work? He is adamant about evidence so where is his?
On the other hand, is there any evidence that suggests that consciousness continues after bodily functions stop? Yes there is.
This is a 5 year prospective Welsh study out of the UK to explore if anoxia, hypercarbia or drug administration could explain the NDE. The conclusion of the study is that the NDE still remains medically inexplicable.
- Quantum Theory Suggests Consciousness Moves on After Death [Oct 2016]
Consciousness after clinical death. The biggest ever scientific study published [Bioethics Research Library Georgetown]
The results revealed that 40% of those who survived a cardiac arrest were aware during the time that they were clinically dead and before their hearts were restarted
And there are many more studies in journals all over the world. Who is on more solid ground using Harris’s standard of evidence, the atheist or the Christian?
Science Replaced God
This argument is a straw man. The religious are accused of believing myths until science came along to save humanity from fantasy. The truth is it was not just the religious, but the contemporary scientists that practiced medical procedures like blood letting. It was a believer Copernicus (1473-1543) in God who first discovered that the earth orbited the sun. Copernicus said;
no sure scheme for the movements of the machinery of the world which has been built for us by the Best and Most Orderly Workman of all. [Galileo, Science, and the Church By Jerome J. Langford]
Atheists like to say that the church tried to silence science and discover, which is partially true. Those in power used that power to enforce their doctrines, not God’s words. No where in scripture does it say that the sun orbits the sun, or is the center of the universe.
Remember, much the same type of men crucified Jesus who was the fulfillment of scripture. God cannot be held responsible for how men use his word for their own gains.
Christianity- Cult of Human Sacrifice
Here is what the bible says about human sacrifice
Leviticus 18:21; Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.
Jeremiah 7:31; They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, and it did not come into My mind.
2 Kings 17:16-17; They forsook all the commands of the Lord their God and made for themselves two idols cast in the shape of calves, and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the starry hosts, and they worshiped Baal. They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.
2 Chronicles 28:3; Moreover, he burned incense in the valley of Ben-hinnom and burned his sons in fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had driven out before the sons of Israel.
There are many more scriptures condemning human sacrifice. When the Israelites turned from God and began practicing these abominations themselves, God sent prophets to tell them they too will be destroyed if they continue. Jeremiah 7:30-34 above.
Harris tries to accuse Christian’s of embracing the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as somehow part of their worship. Even giving the impression that somehow Christians sacrificed him. Jesus was a type of sacrifice.
Jesus was innocent but put to death by Roman officials, at the behest of ruling Jewish religious officials. The same officials Jesus condemned as hypocrites, snakes and vipers. They were told that prostitutes and tax collectors would see heaven before they would because they were dead inside.
Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
“You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth,… [Jesus]
Jesus came from God knowing his end. He willingly gave his life so we could live with the father forever. Is there a father or mother anywhere that would not gladly take their child’s place if they could save their child?
Burying Children Under Foundations
We come from people who used to bury children under the foundations of new buildings as offerings to their imaginary god… People would bury children in postholes… prevent an invisible being from knocking down their buildings…
… These are the sorts of people who wrote the bible. [Harris Video]
I don’t even know what to say about those comments. Harris’s argument is fatally flawed.
- He is not describing any aspect of Christianity so the claim has no bearing on the morality of the Christian God.
- Even if people did this in the name of the Christian God, which they did not, and it is no where in scripture, their imaginary belief has no bearing on the morality of God. Harris must be talking about pagan religions but he is certainly not talking about Christians.
No One More Immoral Than a Christian
And finally, the viewer is left with this damning indictment of Christian morality. There is in Harris’s mind, nothing lower in human existence.
If there is a, a, a less moral, moral framework, I haven’t heard of it.
Dr. Harris is being a little disingenuous, or he is ignorant of even basic history. The atheist, communist, humanist framework has resulted in the deaths of over 100 million people in the 20st century alone.
- 45 million Christian martyrs just in the 20th century [Journey of Promise: West From Sempringham, By Charles W. Allen]
- 100 million woman missing from Asia due to infanticide and abortion [NYTimes]
- In 2009, Sweden legalized sex selection abortion. The killing of babies simply because of their gender.
- 800,000 woman and children are trafficked each year as sex slaves
- 56 million children killed by abortions every year world wide
- 20-50 million dead as a result of Stalin’s Russia [Davies, Norman (1998). Europe: A History. Harper Perennial. p. 964.]
- 11 million deaths by Hitlers Germany [Snyder, Timothy (2010). Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin. New York. p. 384.]
- 40 million dead in Mao Zedong’s China
- 20 million dead Taiping Rebellion
- 9 million dead from the Russian Civil War
- 40 million killed by Genghis Khan
- Hindu practice of Sati, ritual burning alive of a widow on her husbands pyre. While under British rule, in the province of Bengal officials attended such rituals until Christian missionaries pressured the practice to be banned.
These are just a sample of many non-Christian frameworks that Dr. Harris has not heard of.
Dr. Sam Harris’s arguments are presented without substance, evidence or citations. He seems to have little knowledge of the biblical Christian faith and the Christian God who he is Judging. As the rhetoric in this video spans numerous beliefs, cultures and myths, foreign to the Christian faith, His indictment of the Christian God’s morality falls well short of any consideration.
Media, literature and presentations like this are exactly why I keep saying, source what you read and see. No doubt there are lazy people out there who will take what Harris and others like him may say as truth.
