Google this heading and 158,000,000 returns will grace your monitor, and over 3,000,000 if your search Youtube. Millions of pages and videos by laypeople, scientists and educators telling us just how life began on earth.
If you are not familiar with the subject, you would believe from the flood of information on how life began that scientists have solved the mystery, or are at least close. The problem is, when you actually read the pages, or watch the videos, the only thing scientists “know” is that life exists.
Twenty years ago, Scientific American contributor John Horgan, wrote an article on the current state of origins science. He said that the title was censored by his editor;
Exactly 20 years ago, I wrote an article for Scientific American that, in draft form, had the headline above. My editor nixed it, so we went with something less dramatic…
Twenty years later on February 28, 2011 Horgan wrote another article for Scientific American, This time, the new editor did not make him change the title.
Pssst! Don’t tell the creationists, but scientists don’t have a clue how life began
On February 21, 2011,
Two dozen chemists, geologists, biologists, planetary scientists and physicists gathered here recently to ponder where and what Eden might have been.
He goes on to describe that they are still stumped. They were discussing everything from decades old stale ideas of ponds and mud, to postulating that life may have come by extraterrestrial means since life beginning on earth has been a wash, another stale idea from the past suggested by one of the discoverers of the DNA structure, Francis Crick.
What does it tell you about assertions life began in a pond or volcanic vent, when these elite scientists are considering that life may have originated off the planet? Then think again about all the literature and videos dogmatically stating, we know without, just how life began. They just don’t have any empirical data to back up the claims.
Here is an October 2017 CBC news report from British Columbia Canada that betrays the current state of origin of life science. Is it a new and exciting discovery? No, it’s not exciting and its not new, it’s old. The building blocks for life may have come from outer space! But I thought the building blocks were here in mud ponds? That is what half a dozen videos I just watched assured me, and what thousands of titles and and headlines assert.
These reports come out from time to time, I guess to garner funding or something because there is nothing new about the studies. Some of these “new” studies are new to this generation of eager young minds because they are too young to remember when they first appeared in the literature.
Science is replete with assertions that lack data and substance. The only real glue holding these ideas together is ideology. The flawed logic goes something like this, life exists, a designer doesn’t, therefor life spontaneously began. This is an ideological statement, not a scientific one.
Some will accuse design scientists of blindly inferring something from actual evidence, while ignoring their own desperate position, all while claiming the high ground of reason. Ideology forces data to fit thinking. Take for example Nobel laureate, physicist, molecular biologist and neuroscientist Francis Crick’s statement;
Biologists must constantly keep in mind that what they see was not designed, but rather evolved. [What Mad Pursuit, p. 138 (1990)]
Whether is it origins of life, or the so called multiverse, evolution or climate science, don’t just accept what is said at face value. Bias, world views and ideologies all play a part in what everyone, including scientists believe. Read, critically access and investigate claims whether they be friendly to your ideology or not. You may be on solid ground.
Romans 1:20 says;
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
The creator of the universe is also the creator of the laws of the universe. Don’t shrink back from science, or someone who asserts God and science are incompatible. God is there.
