Much of the world believes that the bible is not reliable. They think that much of the truth, if it had any at all, has been lost due to innumerable copy errors.

Please read my posts on the accuracy of manuscript evidence,

We are told that the divinity of Jesus Christ, and the bodily resurrection, along with the doctrine of being born of the Spirit [Born Again] have been corrupted over the centuries. This is the heart of the gospel and without these tenets, there is no Christianity.

From a believers perspective, I want to examine the claim that God failed to keep his word true through the ages. If in fact he did, this would have left millions of people without the light of the gospel and the road to salvation.

As believers in Jesus Christ, are we to accept that the one we believe to be God Almighty, the creator of the heavens and the writer of the bible through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, was unable to maintain the integrity of his message? It is exactly that which is under attack by non believers and Christian sects such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses [JW] and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints [LDS].

Christian Sects vs the Historic Christian Church

Did The Bible Need Correcting?

In the 1800s, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints were formed by men believed to be modern day prophets. Each claiming to have restored the corrupted word of God with the true word of God.

These are claims that can be investigated.

  1. have the manuscripts been corrupted through copy errors and legend?
  2. when did New Testament corruption take place and how long was scripture in error, and people in darkness?

These are questions I have asked LDS and JW elders to which I have never received an adequate answer.

The 66 books of the bible has a rich history of Gods inspiration and interactions with people. The more than 40 authors describe encounters, events and people who documented what God said, what he instructed and what he did. The bible says that nothing is to be decided by less than two or three witnesses. The followers of these modern day prophets have to accept only their word that what they saw and say is true.

2 Corinthians 13:1;  Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

Deuteronomy 19:15;  One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

Matthew 18:16;  But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. – Jesus

5,852 Greek Manuscripts Today vs Sever Yesterday

It was claimed in the 1800s that because the King James Bible [KJV] was only based on seven manuscripts, dating one thousand years after the events described was full of errors. An argument in those days may have had some weight with skeptics but today, there are 5,852 manuscripts written in the original hand written Greek.

With manuscripts dating back to the 2nd century, when exactly was there time for scripture to become corrupt? According to biblical scholars, none of the 5,800 plus newly discovered manuscripts contradict the original KJV manuscripts in any meaningful way. All of the central tenets of Christianity are intact according to professor Wallace. Including the deity of Jesus Christ and his bodily resurrection.

Bart Ehrman is the worlds leading agnostic/atheist biblical skeptic scholar. He is a best selling author and debater who agrees that none of the New Testament manuscripts contradict the core doctrines of  the Orthodox Christian church.

For a believer or a skeptic in God Almighty the evidence is very compelling for the integrity of the New Testament biblical manuscripts. Yes there are spelling differences and and some suspect lines of scripture, but none of them impact the deity of Christ, the Trinity, the resurrection or any other core Christian doctrine.

God’s Word Will Never Disappear

Now lets look at God’s word itself. If you call yourself a believer in God and the bible is part of your faith, it will be useful to look at what it says about its longevity.

1 Peter 1:24-25; The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever. [about 67AD]

Luke 21:33;  Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.Jesus

Isaiah 40:8;  The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever [about the 8th century BC]

Romans 1:16-17;  For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes… This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight.

Jesus is the Living Word

Jesus is the word of life, the living word, and the word of God. Are we to consider that Jesus himself will become corrupt?

John 1:1; In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God.

1 John 1:1; We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life

If you are a believer, then you believe that the word of God is inspired. If you are of the belief that it is only written by man and is not inspired, then none of this really matters to you because you are believing a different gospel.

2 Timothy 3:16-17;  All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

2 Peter 1:20-21;  Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.

The Word of God is Life

The word of God is life to everyone who hears. That word is Jesus himself who is the giver of life.

John 6:63-64;  “The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But some of you do not believe me.” – Jesus

Proverbs 4:20-22; My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.

James 1:21;  … humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

Hebrews 13:7-9;  Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.

Ephesians 1:15;  And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own

To believe that the scripture was corrupted by mere men, we also have to believe;

  1. God is not powerful enough to maintain the integrity of his message.
  2. Satan, darkness or even men were able to overcome God’s true message and destroy it
  3. God’s word did disappear, and he lied
  4. In the second, third, fourth or fifth, or eighth centuries God’s word was corrupted, though that is difficult to maintain since we now have thousands of manuscripts now that date through those centuries.
  5. millions of people were without the light of the gospel and without hope of salvation

Eternal life comes from the word of God. He would not leave anyone without remedy after the cost of his Son on the cross.

1 Peter 1:23;  For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God

Conclusion

  • God did not fail
  • There is no time for corruption of the message of salvation
  • The God of all creation is powerful and able to keep mere man from corrupting his word
  • God promised he would never leave us or forsake us. He said his word would never disappear, not even for a few years and he doesn’t lie
  • Scholars and skeptical experts in textural criticism disagree with claims of the modern day prophets
  • If the god you follow was defeated by men, he is not God
  • If the prophets you follow claimed or claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ and say you cannot understand God’s word yourself, they are liars and a false prophets

If the Jesus you follow is not the Jesus of the historic Christian Holy Bible, you are in grave danger of missing the message of salvation. Jesus said many would come in his name, many false Christs bringing false messages.

The will and actions of men are no match for God. They have no effect on him.

Proverbs 21:1;  The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the LORD; he guides it wherever he pleases.

Isaiah 14:27;  The LORD of Heaven’s Armies has spoken—who can change his plans? When his hand is raised, who can stop him?

The word of God is trustworthy and nothing, not angels above, not Satan below, not man here on earth can corrupt God’s plan of salvation. Not for a millennia, not for a moment, will God’s plan be extinguished.

John 1:4-5;  The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it

The God Almighty is powerful and true. His love for us is so great that he sacrificed his Son, so we could have eternal life. The word of God is his love letter to us, and I don’t believe for a moment that there is anything that can come between me, or you and his love.

Romans 8:35-39;

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? …

I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Praise the Lord!
