I have been thinking about an old friend of mine who recently passed on from this life. Although I miss her today, I am comforted in the knowledge that she is not gone. She is alive, conscious and with the one who loved her so much, that he suffered and died so we could all be together for eternity.

Christians are not the only ones who believe in an afterlife, many secular scientists are doing research on how consciousness survives death. It is called a NDE, Near Death Experience.

Dr. Sam Parnia is an assistant professor of Medicine at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He also is director of research into cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is the director of the Human Consciousness Project at the University of Southampton, and has a PhD in cell biology. Below is a study he did on consciousness after death.

  • Results of world’s largest Near Death Experiences study published [University of SouthHampton]

    • In 2008, a large-scale study involving 2060 patients from 15 hospitals in the United Kingdom, United States and Austria was launched. The AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation) study examined the broad range of mental experiences in relation to death. Researchers also tested the validity of conscious experiences using objective markers for the first time in a large study to determine whether claims of awareness compatible with out-of-body experiences correspond with real or hallucinatory events.

The bible gives us great hope for a life to come, a life free of crime, pain, sickness and suffering. This life is not all there is. We turned our backs on God because he gave us free will to do so. Love which is free to flee, is the only way to receive true love back and this life is our opportunity to choose to accept God’s love.

This life is full of injustice, pain and sorrow for many, but a day is coming when God will make everything right again, like it was before we took control of our own lives and told God we didn’t need him.

The bible is full of scripture that tells us our consciousness continues even after we pass on.

After his death and resurrection, Jesus preached the good news to the spirits who were in prison

1 Peter 3:19; he preach to the spirits in prison who disobey God long ago

1 Peter 4:5-6; But remember that they will have to face God, who will judge everyone, both the living and the dead. That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead—so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit.

If we were not conscious and alert post death then these scriptures make no sense. When the bible talks about the dead, it is talking about those who’s bodies have died. If not, how could Jesus preach to them? Why would he refer to those who “now live forever with God in the Spirit”?

Mark 12:26-27; Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said to Moses, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ So he is the God of the living, not the dead. – Jesus

John reveals to us in the book of Revelation that he saw multitudes in heaven who had died. There bodies were dead but they were very much alive.

Multi-dimensional space is nothing new to physicists as many of them accept the theory that there are infinite universes that we cannot see. So why is an afterlife so unreasonable?

Jesus tells us a story of a conversation Moses, a rich man and Lazarus who had all passed away. Then there is the incident with Jesus, Moses and Elijah.

Matthew 17:1-3; Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.

In 2 Corinthians Chapter 5:6-10 we learn;

So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. For we live by believing and not by seeing. Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.

It is the clear and comforting teaching of the bible that we continue on after our bodies fail. Our consciousness, our spirit does not die when our heart stops. That is when our real life begins.

Colossians 3:1-4; Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

The knowledge that my friend is alive and aware as I write this is calming to me. She put her trust in Christ and he has promised her, and everyone who trusts in him, to give their spirits new bodies one day. Bodies without corruption, disease or pain.

Time passes so quickly. In 100 years everyone we know, everyone reading this post today will have moved on from this earth. Life here is very short compared to eternity. I am so happy my friend prepared for her eternity, because now she is safe and waiting for the rest of us to get home.

Hebrews 13:14; For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.

Romans 8:10-11; And [if] Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

The Apostle Peter tells us that the body and the spirit are two separate entities.

2 Peter 2:26;Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

He also explains that faith without action is also dead. Believing that God exists is not enough, we must act on that belief to have eternal life with him.
