Scientists do not dispute that DNA is a digital code. That it is a program blueprint that lists the instructions to build living things. Intuitively, this points to a programmer or designer, so scientists have to suppress the urge to investigate the possibility of an intelligent involvement with life.

One of the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA Francis Crick, put it this way.

Biologists must constantly keep in mind that what they see was not designed, but rather evolved.
Francis Crick, What Mad Pursuit (1990), 138.

What is Deoxyribonucleic Acid?

National Human Genome Research Institute

We all know that elephants only give birth to little elephants, giraffes to giraffes, dogs to dogs and so on for every type of living creature. But why is this so?

The answer lies in a molecule called deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which contains the biological instructions that make each species unique. DNA, along with the instructions it contains, is passed from adult organisms to their offspring during reproduction.

Without DNA, there is no life, because there would be no instructions on how to build living things. The big debate is, did nature write the code or did a designer?

We know by experience that the only source of code/instruction sets comes from the mind of an intelligent agent. Nowhere is nature is there examples of matter giving rise to new code.

If you want your computer screen to do act or look different, everyone knows you have to add computer code. Randomly mixing up the existing code only leads to the erratic behavior and crashing we all face with Microsoft windows programs.

What does the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates think about DNA?

Biological information is the most important information we can discover, because over the next several decades it will revolutionize medicine. Human DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.

(Gates, The Road Ahead, Penguin: London, Revised, 1996 p. 228)

Richard Dawkins [Leading Atheist biologist]

It is raining instructions out there; it’s raining programs; it’s raining tree-growing, fluff-spreading, algorithms. That is not a metaphor, it is the plain truth. It couldn’t be any plainer if it were raining floppy discs. [The Blind Watchmaker (1986), 111]

… we know that genes themselves, within their minute internal structure, are long strings of pure digital information. What is more, they are truly digital, in the full and strong sense of computers and compact disks… The machine code of the genes is uncannily computer-like. Apart from differences in jargon, the pages of a molecular biology journal might be interchanged with those of a computer engineering journal.” [River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life, New York:Basic Books/Harper Collins, 1995. p17]

Amazing Facts About DNA

  • DNA is in every one of the 100 trillion human cells
  • DNA is made up of only 4 base letters [A-T-C-G]
  • Approximately 3 billion base pairs in every cell [3 GigaBytes of data]
  • Typing at 200wpm, it would take 29 years to record the human genetic code
  • Each cell contains about 2 meters of DNA
  • End to end, the DNA in the human body would reach the sun and back hundreds of times
  • Every bit of information on the internet could be stored in 1oz of DNA
  • DNA is called the longest word known to humankind
  • DNA make proteins, Proteins are needed to make DNA [Chicken and the Egg]
  • DNA is a self replicating, error correcting code
  • No one knows how DNA originated
  • Everyone describes DNA as software / programming code

Dr. Craig Venter is a world renown Atheist geneticist who was one of the first to synthetically create a new genome. In this video below he remarks on the DNA software that builds living organisms.

DNA is a digital code, the blueprints to building life.

DNA has two types of digital information — the genes that encode proteins, which are the molecular machines of life, and the gene regulatory networks that specify the behaviour of the genes. [feature The digital code of DNA”; The Scientific Journal Nature]

Many scientists find the characteristics of DNA to be convincing evidence for design, not random chance. While evolution scientists struggles with the erosion of common dissent models, other scientists postulate that DNA similarities to other species could be the result of similar design. You wouldn’t reinvent the automobile wheel to use it on a baby carriage or a belt and pulley system.

The human cell is described as a manufacturing and assembly plant made up of nano-machinery. Not because it is convenient language, but because that is exactly what it is. This PBS Nova presentation shows just how intuitive it is to think the cell is a designed process. This is why Crick encouraged scientists to ignore the design inference, and tell themselves it has evolved.

Though DNA can build all the structures used by the human body, we have to ask ourselves,

  • Who or what gave us self awareness that the rest of the animal kingdom do not have?
  • Where is our consciousness located, our sense of who we are, our inner being?
  • How is it we can even comprehend the universe in which we live?
  • Is the statement below, more rational than DNA is a digital program code therefore there could be a programmer? Dawkins is referring to life coming from non life, or chemical evolution called, abiogenesis.

However improbable the origin of life might be, we know it happened on Earth because we are here. [Richard Dawkins; “The God Delusion” p. 165]

Its been 150 years since Darwin. Some of the best minds in science have been trying to produce major changes in species. If Darwin was correct, then the world’s finest molecular and cellular biologists, nature should have been able to effect major changes in biological forms. Instead, evolutionary scientists are still touting antibiotic resistance as the evidence that evolution can transform a land mammal into a whale, a fish into a lizard, and a dinosaur into a bird.

Is life blind chance and time, or purposeful design and meaning?

Psalm 139:13-14

For you created my inmost being;… I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made
