A common complaint from none believers is that there isn’t even consensus among Christians about what to believe so the whole religion is a waste of time. Is this a legitimate critique or is it a misguided generalization?

It is difficult to get a group of people to agree on one idea let alone the bibles instructions for all life’s behaviours. Do Christians differ on many aspects of biblical teachings, yes, but the differences are primarily peripheral and not the core tenets of belief.

Does anyone subscribe to the notion of ridding society of law enforcement because some abuse their authority over others? Or what about the judiciary, does anyone think it is a good idea to dismantle the court system because some judges reinterpret laws to fit their own ideal? Of course not, so why is Christianity singled out as being illegitimate because some of its followers do much the same thing.

The apostle Paul had to deal with division back in the beginning of the church. We are no different today, people are just as prideful, just as eager to share their wisdom.

1 Corinthians 3:1-4; “Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in the Christian life. I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world?”

Paul is saying here that there are some who are mature in the faith and some who are religious but lack depth. All kinds are attracted to Christianity, but not all are committed to Jesus. Some are in it for money others for power. We see this principal in religion and secular society alike.

Is there corruption in politics? Is it fair to say that some are in politics for the power? Does that mean that democracy as an ideology is a waste of time? Of course not. The problem is people not the system. Christianity is no different because it is made up of people who are trying to supplant their own wisdom with God’s.

gallup morality

You can see from the Gallup Poll above that people in general don’t agree on much. It doesn’t matter if it is about Christianity, morality, or general societal philosophies. The complaints some have about Christians not agreeing is generalization and fails to take into account the core unifying beliefs.

Society will manipulate data and statistics to support their point of view. For example a survey may use ambiguous language to skew a result one way or another. I read a survey once that asked two questions;

  • Do you believe God made the world in 6 literal days
  • Do you believe evolution is real

The result was that fewer people today believe in God. The questions are simply too ambiguous to be of any use to either side. The bible has ambiguous verses vulnerable to manipulation too but, there are others that are non negotiable that help interpret the less obvious verses.

How about when the facts are concrete, when science and the government are in lock step on an issue? Surly we can depend on some things.

In the 1970’s science was certain that eating eggs was detrimental to heart health because of their cholesterol content. Even a congressional committee weighed in and support a vast reduction in the consumption of eggs, which harmed the egg industry. Today, science now knows that consumption of cholesterol has little to no effect on blood cholesterol levels.

There will always be people about their own agenda. Don’t miss the forest for the trees. Christianity should not be judged by its peripheral adherents. It is also a big mistake to throw away the important message of salvation because of disagreements on less important interpretations about behavior.

  • God created the heavens and the earth [period]
  • Jesus came in bodily form, died and rose again on the third day [The Resurrection]
  • Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone [How Can I Be Saved]
  • We must confess our sins and turn from them to God
  • No one can earn their way to heaven, it is a free gift from God.
  • If you are not reborn of God, you are not going to be with God for eternity

These are the articles of salvation. Even if you get everything else wrong, you will find salvation in these verses. No one will spend eternity separated from God because of a disagreement about Hell, eating pork, is the Sabbath Saturday or Sunday, or if Satan’s number is 666 or 616. The important questions are, does God exist, and is Jesus who he says he is.

Romans 10:9; “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

It does not take much research to see that Christian belief is well supported and faith in God is a reasonable, not a blind faith. Anyone who says different simply has not done the research. The average person invests more time into buying a car, or a house, than whether God is real and their eternity might be in question.

For anyone who is truly wondering if God exists or not, there is enough information in these blog posts, the resources page, and the associated youtube channel to see why Christianity is a reasonable faith. Don’t trust your eternity on here-say.

Romans 1:18-21

“But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky.

Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like.”

Read The Word of God For Yourself and Let God Speak to You, because one day you will stand before God to answer why you did not believe his Son.

It is God’s word that corrects us, not the other way around
