Archaeology has been unearthing hard evidence of biblical people, places and events for over the decades. There are many modern scientists who dismiss the bible as historically accurate. Usually, because they believe the narrative to be an outright myth. Then when evidence is dug up substantiating the biblical record, the skepticism morphs to challenging the date they believe the artifact to be, and the date they believe the biblical narrative states.
Mostly, the objections and assertions of mythology arise not from evidence unearthed, but from what has not been found. Interestingly when you mention the lack of fossil evidence for evolution, those scientists are quick to say that is just hasn’t been found yet. You can’t have it both ways.
Just because you have not found a tablet with the name King David on it, doesn’t mean he did not exist. Wait, bad example, up until a “stella” was found in 1993, scientists said King David and King Solomon were myths, in 2014 six clay seals were found at the archaeological site of Khirbet Summeily in Israel.
1996-“What made the Tel Dan inscription one of the most exciting Biblical archaeology discoveries for scholars and the broader public was its unprecedented reference to the “House of David.” (The Tel Dan Inscription: The First Historical Evidence of King David from the Bible)
2014-“Dr Hardin said: “we are very positive that these bullae are associated with the Iron Age IIA, which we date to the 10th century BC, and which lends general support to the historical veracity of David and Solomon as recorded in the Hebrew Biblical texts.” (New Finds Suggest Biblical Kings David and Solomon Actually Existed)
Another example used to scorn the bible and accuse it of being fantasy was the existence of the Hittites, mentioned numerous times in the Old Testament. Uriah was the Hittite husband of Bathsheba, the woman King David had an adulterous affair with. In 1906, archaeologist Hugo Winckler found the Hittite capital city Hattusha. Hattusha, became an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986.
The city of Jericho was another laughable myth described in the bible according to secular and even some so called biblical scholars. That is until it was found. Ok, so Jericho was a city but was that the end of the similarity to the bible? Nope,
It had been destroyed by fire
Joshua 6:24; “Then the Israelites burned the town and everything in it.”
it’s walls fell outward, not inward as was usual in a siege
Joshua 6:20; “When the people heard the sound of the rams’ horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it.”
There was housing on its outer walls
Joshua 2:15; “Then, since Rahab’s house was built into the town wall, she let them down by a rope through the window.”
On one side, the housing remained intact
Joshua 2:17,18; “Before they left, the men told her, “We will be bound by the oath we have taken only if you follow these instructions. When we come into the land, you must leave this scarlet rope hanging from the window through which you let us down. And all your family members—your father, mother, brothers, and all your relatives—must be here inside the house.”
Pool of Siloam:
- Uncovered in 2004, a stone pool was identified by archaeologists as the Pool of Siloam referred to in John 9:7 as the place where Jesus sent a blind man to be healed.
King Hezekiah: Royal Seal (2 Kings 20:14, Isaiah 39:3, 2 Chronicals 32:30)
Erastus of Corinth (Acts 19:22, Romans 16:23, 2 Timothy 4:2)
Artemis of the Ephesians (Acts 19:28, 34, 35)
Jezebel Seal Found: wife of the Israelite King Ahab (1 Kings 21:15)
City of Derbe (Acts 14:20, 16:1)
Cyrus, king of Persia (559-530 BC) (Ezra 1:1, Daniel 10:1)
The list can go on and on and on. It does not take much investigation to see that countless people, places and events that have been described in the bible have been verified through physical evidence. Much more has not been conclusive, but the evidence points towards the validity of scripture and not the other way around.
Faith in the biblical record is not blind, without reason. Of course there is considerable controversy over the bible, Jesus and the concept of the Judgement and or existence of God. It is offensive.
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”
“If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.”
We are not just dealing with logic and evidence here. We are dealing with spiritual powers beyond our control, that control this world and those in it who do not know the Lord. Sin is offensive and no one wants to hear they are a sinner. Because Jesus came to save the sinner, those who don’t believe they need one, hate him. If it was not spiritual, Jesus would just be ignored, but many of the lost in this world are not content with ignoring Jesus and his message. Though they laugh and claim it is nonsense for children, never in history has so many, spent so much effort, to disprove someone who they say doesn’t exist.
Ephesians 6:12: “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
Faith is reasons friend. You don’t have to feel stupid, or uneducated to believe the bible and its message. The multitudes have been trying for millennia to discount and discredit the best selling book on the planet, with little effect.
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
“Evidence”, “understood by what has been made”, these scriptures are not telling the believer to ignore reason, but they give us the confidence to explore reason and the physical world around us. If we do, we will see God’s fingerprints.
